Not From Toronto

work good, commute bad

November 16, 2007 · 5 Comments

I’ve only been unemployed for a day and a half (although it’s felt like a week), and I have a new contract to go to already. It starts on Monday, and will be earning me more than I’ve ever made before. Nice.

The downside is that I’m looking at an 80-minute commute, one way, and that’s not taking into account any traffic or weather problems. That is going to suck very, very hard.

It’s also going to mean that Jannette likely won’t be able to work the same amount of hours as she’s been doing, especially if the company I’m contracting at isn’t flexible on working hours. That will have to be determined. We’re still trying to see if Jannette has enough work hours in already to qualify for sick leave before maternity leave… I hope so.

While I’m glad to have work, and happy with the contracting rate, I’m not thrilled with my agency. When they first asked me about this opportunity, I told them my concerns about working hours, and that I wouldn’t be able to stay there any longer than mid-January. Their reaction? You start Monday. As of this very second the only other information I know is the company name, and the city they are located in. Contact name? Street address? Nope. Just that I’m supposed to be somewhere near Toronto by 9am Monday.

It’s also becoming very apparent that this agency – despite what they’ve said in the past – has no intention of trying to find me a permanent position. They’ve had nearly 3 years to do so, and have failed to so much as get me an interview. Not that I’m surprised… when I’m making them $10/hr, why would they want to lose that? So the heck with it. I’m going to do this contract, and keep looking for something else closer and more permanent.

At least I don’t have to apply for EI this time, or even worse, get a temp job. That last one in an egg processing facility was quite enough of that, thank you.
